Basil seeds

Basil seeds

Basil is an Indian native that is best known for the aroma and flavour it imparts to Italian cuisine.

Basil cultivars are nearly infinite, each cultivar producing a slightly different product within the same species as a result of hybridisation and growing conditions. The herb is generally sweet, slightly minty, and slightly peppery.

Common Uses:

  • Both Mediterranean and Asian cuisines make extensive use of Basil to impart flavour to their dishes.
  • Pesto is a savoury oil-based sauce made with this herb that is used in pasta and pizza recipes.
  • Marinara sauces beg for generous amounts of this flavouring.
  • One of the simplest summer recipes is to slice fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, sprinkle with herb, and finish with a drizzle of good-quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
  • This succulent herb is frequently used in Asian rice salads and fish recipes.
  • Dried Basil Leaves are occasionally added to ice cream and other desserts to impart a piquant flavour.
